    四、作息平衡: 人体动静适宜的健康状态。
    4. Work and rest balance: a healthy state with appropriate exercise and rest of the human body.
    《黄帝内经》说,人有五种疲劳:“久视伤血,久卧伤气,久坐伤肉,久立伤骨,久行伤筋。”但人只要生存就脱不了这五种状态。所以,我们就要把握适度、动静相宜。
    According to The Medical Classic of the Yellow Emperor, people fatigue on five occasions: watching long harms the blood, sleeping long harms the qi, sitting long harms the flesh, standing long harms the bone, and walking long harms the tendons. No one can avoid these five states, so we should try to arrange appropriate exercise and rest to ensure good health.
    运动平衡。生命在于运动,长期不运动血脉不活络。饱食终日,人体收大于支,易患高血压、高血糖、高血脂等肥胖症。坚持运动就能使心脏收缩有力,肺活量增加,血流加快,机体免疫功能得到增强,还可以促进肌肉发达、关节灵活、食欲增加,使人感到心矿神怡,有利于中枢神经的调节以及生物钟的正常运转。但是,运动并非多多益善,过度运动超负荷磨损,往往会使人体器官受损、失调引发疾病。所以,运动也要量力而行,适可而止。
    Exercise balance. Life lies in movement. If one does not do any exercise for a long time, his blood circulation will lack invigoration. One being satiated with food all day, the supply to his body will exceed the needs, then high blood pressure, hyperlipemia, and hyperglycemia and other adiposity diseases might develop. Keeping on exercise helps build the heart, increase the vital capacity and accelerate the blood circulation, thus strengthening the immunity functions, muscle development and joint flexibility, increasing the appetite, making people feel relaxed and happy, and facilitating the adjustment of the nervous centralis and the normal operation of the biological clock. However, it’s not that the more exercise, the better. Excessive exercise will cause damage and maladjustment to human organs and further lead to diseases. So, we should weigh the advantages and disadvantages and do adequate amount of exercise.
    人享受多了会退化。野兔平均存活15年,而家兔的寿命才4—5年。大象在野外生活可活到200岁,而圈养起来则活不过80岁。现代生活给我们带来许多安逸享受,但太舒服、太享受,人就退化了。许多人懒于运动,终日“坐”以待毙。全世界每年有200多万人因此而亡。所以,许多人不是死于疾病,而是死于无知、死于自己不科学的生活方式。如果生活方式科学,就可以预防近六成的糖尿病。只要注意起居饮食平衡坚持运动,则三分之一的癌症患者可以避免。
    Too much enjoyment will result in degeneration. Take the hare for instance. Wild hares can live as long as 15 years, but the life span of domestic hares is only 1/3 of that. Elephants can live 200 years in the wild, but no longer than 80 years if they are fed in a pen. Modern life has brought us endless ease and enjoyment, but excessive enjoyment is no good to human beings. People reluctant to do exercise may not know that their "sitting still" all day is a virtual “waiting for death”, as more than 2 million people die of this every year around the world. So, many die not of disease, but of ignorance and of their unscientific lifestyles. Scientific lifestyles help prevent nearly 60% of diabetes. Keeping a balance of work, rest and diet, and appropriate amount of exercise will save 1/3 people from cancers.
    其实,无论闲与累,过度皆不可行。要想身体好,就要选择合理的生活方式。
    In effect, excessiveness is never a good term for either rest or work. Rational lifestyle is the sole key to good health.
    睡眠平衡。睡眠是为了补充能量。从“天人相应”的观点来看,睡眠方位对人睡眠、健康很有影响。这是因为地球是一个大磁场,人体也是一个小磁场,大磁场无时不对人体小磁场产生作用。
    Sleep balance. Sleeping is a way to supply energy to the body. According to the theory on “correspondence between man and universe”, the direction of sleeping position affects people’s sleep and health. This is because the earth is a huge magnetic field while human body is a small one, and the large one influences the small one at all times.
    唐代名医孙思邈说:“凡人卧,春夏向东,秋冬向西。”是说睡眠方位春夏二季头向东,秋冬二季头向西。有些养生家则主张,东方主阳气升发,四季头朝东卧较好。还有人认为,卧向应随四季变化。我们研究认为:采取东西卧位、头向东较好。而被褥、枕头材料、睡眠时间长短等应随当地习俗为好。
    Sun Simiao, a renowned doctor of the Tang Dynasty (618-907), noted that a sleeper should lie with his head toward east in spring and summer, and west in autumn and winter. Other experts on health preservation hold that it is better if one lies with his head toward east all year round as the east represents the masculine and positive yang. But still some argue that direction for sleeping position should change as the seasons change. Our study has revealed that it is better to sleep with one's head toward east, and the choice of quilts, pillows and length of sleep should comply with local customs.
    总之,作息平衡就是人体能量的储存/消耗平衡。无论动、静都应把握 “适度”。才能保持身心舒畅、延年益寿。
    Anyhow, work and rest balance is the balance of storage and consumption of the human energy. Either work or rest should be kept within certain scope so as to live a happy and prolonged life.
